Canadian Diamonds🍁
My estranged lesbian sister recently got engaged a month ago and her fiancee is Canadian and I assume this is a Canadian diamond bcoz they live near the biggest diamond mines in Canada and its hard to judge a diamond's quality just by looking at a single picture but the way it looks even on my sister's chubby ring finger (they probably fed her well) the diamond already looks BIG probably 1 carat & the average price of a 1 carat diamond is US$5k and this stone looks better than average for the cut is well defined and it looks white even when the picture is taken with alot of yellow incandescent lightbulb. But the quality or value of the ring is besides the point. What we will tackle here is there such a thing as a certified Canadian diamond?
Canadian diamonds do exists in fact Canada is one of the major supplier of the finest quality diamonds in the world and Canadian diamonds are very high in demand due to the awareness of people on the negative impact of diamond mining in some parts of the world and we all know blood diamonds right? That's why many diamond consumers prefers Canadian diamonds knowing they are guaranteed conflict free, though Russians diamonds are also conflict free but it seems due to ignorance, many people hated anything coming from Russia and for whatever reason the topic is worthy for another blogpost.
So Canadian diamonds do exist so the BIG question is, is the diamond on the 18kt white gold solitaire band engagement ring worn by my sister an authentic Canadian diamond? Perhaps the jeweler can certify the origin or like I said since it is bought in Edmonton, Alberta Canada just a few hundred miles to the Canadian diamond mines, people might assume it must be from Canada!
But the truth is, no major gem labs can identify the origin of diamonds unlike in colored stones. Though some diamond merchant and gem labs can identify the origin of diamonds but they identify them based on perception which can be subjective and not really scientific. For example India is noted for producing the finest diamonds in history but their diamonds have long been exhausted over a hundred years ago so Indian diamonds are all antique cuts and the finest ones possesing an incredible limpidity or transparency and colorlessness can be labeled as Golconda diamonds but then again not all diamonds coming from India are fine quality. For natural color diamonds for example their origin are judged based on their color, for example most lime green colored diamonds which range from greenish yellow, green yellow, yellow green or yellowish green with varying degrees of green fluorescence tends to come from Venezuela so any diamond merchant might assume they are Venezuelan diamonds but then it is not an absolute guarantee, for green diamonds can also be found elsewhere such as in some African countries like Ivory Coast, Botswana among others but their colors for example Botswana green diamonds tends to be lighter and usually the green color is only on the surface once polished then the green skin dissapears revealing a colorless diamond.
With that said no one can guarantee the origin of diamonds. Those diamonds mined from Canada are then shipped to diamond polishing centers all around the world including Canada and after they are cut & polished they are then further exported to jewelers all over the world to be set in jewelry. Though those diamonds polished in Canada are more likely to be Canadian diamonds but like I said no one can guarantee that coz as far as I know Canadian diamonds aren't cheap and if you buy a Canadian diamond from Canada it should be cheaper there than anywhere else since it didn't travelled from country to country to be processed and the savings can be passed on to the local consumers, and that is just a simple logic coz the only truth that I know of is Canadian diamonds are more expensive than similar diamonds mined elsewhere regardless of you're buying them in a jewelry store near a Canadian diamond mine or in a jewelry store in Hawaii they are all priced desame and the Canadian logo is nothing but a marketing strategy. But that will not change unless Canada will take their Canadian diamond brand seriously and impose strict measures to protect their brand and not being used and abused by unscrupulous dealers coz a conflict diamond from elsewhere branded as Canadian diamond is really an insult not just to the consumers but to the government of Canada as well!
