T here's two birthstones for October & they are the opal which is the traditional & the pink tourmaline like these 2 carat Ethiopian green opal and this 1.75 tourmaline in my personal collection. However the choice for opals as a birthstone are broad while for tourmaline although it comes in many different colors only the pink tourmaline is considered a birthstone like this 1.75 carat emerald cut deep purplish pink tourmaline.   Opals come in many different pricepoints and the finest varieties are extremely rare & very valuable just like the finest varieties of tourmaline called 'paraiba tourmaline'.  However a pink tourmaline is cheaper than the finest opal but it doesn't mean they're cheap.  A 1.04 carat pink tourmaline from Leibish & Co. retails for $400! O ctober has various gemstones that the colored stones industry wanted to promote but only opals  & pink tourmaline are in my opinion traditional October birthstones though pink tourmaline is considered a substitute which is to me it doesn't really make sense since opals are readily available & can be worn by both sex while pink tourmaline is quite feminine.  My mesmerizing 1.86ct step-cut deep purplish pink tourmaline soon to be set into jewelry! Tourmaline however comes in all the colors of the rainbow but it is only the pink tourmaline that is considered an October birthstone as it is the most common color for tourmalines though considered very rare & the finest pink tourmalines can sell for as much as $3k dollars or more per carat!  Opals on the other hand can sell for as much as $20k dollars per carat especially the Australian black opals with red & rainbow play of colors.
